Eye Flashcards
Cornea function
Transparent, dome shaped. It is a powerful refracting surface, it provides 2/3 of the eyes focusing power
Pupil function
Hole in the centre of the eye where light passes through
Conjunctiva function
Thin transparent tissue that covers the visible part of the eye. It has blood vessels that are nearly invisible to us. Protective layer
Lens function
Focus the light onto the retina. It is attached by suspensor ligaments
Iris function
Coloured part that controls the amount of light that enters the eye. It has tiny muscles that make it dilate and constrict the pupil size.
Retina function
Light sensitive part of the eye, captures light rays that enter the eye (rods and cones)
Humour function
Fluid like gel that fills the eye, keeps the shape. Also provides nourishment (aqueous and vitreous)
Fovea function
Very centre of macula, where light must fall to see fine details like reading or recognising faces.
Macula function
Located in the centre of the retina. Small and highly sensitive, crucial for central vision
Optic nerve
Transmits electrical impulses to the brain. Connects to the macula. Has no rods or cones (is a blind spot)
