Extranuous And Confounding Variables Flashcards
Extraneous variables
Unwanted extra variables other than the IV
That could have an effect on the DV
This would lower internal validity of the study
Situational variables
things to do with the environment
Eg task difficulty or standardised instructions
Participant variables
Things to do with the participants
Eg ages, iq ,personality
Experimenter variables
Things to do with the researcher eg
The investigator
Confounding variables
When extraneous variable is not controlled and does affect the DV
Identify an EV and explain how it can be controlled ?
Name (1mark)
State how you can control it (1 mark )
Identify and EV and explain why it should be controlled ?
Name (1 mark)
Explain links to the scenario (1 mark )
State why it should be controlled , what impact would it have on the Dv , like lowering internal valdity (1 mark )
Demand characteristics
Clues given off within the research , could lead to the ppts to change their natural behaviour
Choosing either to help or hinder the research
How could demand characteristics be controlled ?
Getting another researcher who does not the the aims of the research , to carry out the experiment thus not giving clues to influence the ppts
Control : randomisation
Aspects of research should be random and not decided by researcher
Eg if ppts have to learn list of words it should be randomly generated out of a hat
Control : standardisation
All ppts experience same environment and instructions
Eg using same instructions and procedures for all ppts, includes standardised instructions that are read out to all ppts
