Correlations Flashcards
Correlations
Show a link or relationship between two variables
Known as co variable 1 and co variable 2
No IV or Dv thus no manipulation of variables by researcher
What does one point on a scattergram represent ?
Represents 2 scores from 1 ppt
Correlation coefficient
Results from a correlation statistical test tell us how strong or weak a correlation is
Range for -1 to +1
Closer to 0 weaker the relationship
What word do you not use for a correlation hypothesis?
Difference
Non directional hypothesis correlation
There will be a significant relationship between (operationalised co variable 1) and (operationalised co variable 2)
Directional hypothesis correlations
There will be a significant positive or negative relationship between (operationalised co variable 1) and (operationalised co variable 2)
What is the difference between a correlation and an experiment ?
Experiment has 2 condition
Correlation has 2 variables
Experiment
Experiment the researches is looking for a difference between conditions
Researcher manipulates IV and measures effect on DV
Possible to establish cause and effect
Correlation
Correlation shows relationship between co variables
No manipulation by researcher
Cause and effect cannot be established
Correlation Ao3 strength
No manipulation of variables so it’s appropriate to use when studying sensitive issues that may raise ethical issues
Or when it may be inappropriate to manipulate a situation
Whereas in an experiment it would be impractical to investigate a cause and effect
Correlation Ao3 (L)
Difficult to establish cause and effect between 2 variables as only a relationship is found
Thus other extraneous variables could be responsible for the relationship found
Lowering internal validity
