the use of punishment threats ppl to stop offending- deterrence. deterrence consists of individual deterrence and general deterrence.
individual deterrence
punishment given to offenders to prevent them from committing further crimes eg. suspended sentence, conditional discharge.
suspended sentence

conditional discharge
no punishment but if the offender commits another crime, then they can be punished for the first offence and the new one.
general deterrence
