Experiments Design Flashcards
1
Q
what is repeated measuures design
A
where each participant is asigned to more than one condition of the IV
2
Q
strengths of repeated measures
A
- results wont be subject to particiapant varibles e.g individual differences between participants
- putting more confidence in DV changes being soley due to manipulated changes in IV
3
Q
weaknesses of repeates measures
A
- risk of order effects, reduced by couonterbalancing e.g controlling variable same amount of times
- if a particiapnt drops out, data will be lost from all conditions
4
Q
what is matches pairs design
A
equal groups where particiapnts are matches on certain characteristics e.g gender or age
5
Q
strengths of matches pairs
A
- order effects will not be observed as particiapnts only take part in one condition
- the tailored participant - matching process reduces risk of particiapnts varibles
6
Q
weaknesses of matches pairs
A
- different particiapnt need to be recruited for each condition, which is difficult and expensive
- matching is more complex process - always difficult to match particiapnts identity
7
Q
what is independent groups design
A
an experimental design whereby different participants are used for each experimental condition
8
Q
strengths of independent measures
A
- order effects cant be observes, as no particiapnts will be used in more than one condition (allocated randomly)
- data collected will be less time consuming (if all conditions of experiments can be conducted simaltaneously)
9
Q
weaknesses of independent measures
A
- different particiapnt need to be recruited for each condition (difficult and expensive)
- risk of participant variables (individual differences between particiapnts) affecting results between conditions, rather than soley manipulation of IV
