Experiments Flashcards
What is a variable
Anything that can be measured that may change
What do experiments measure
How one variable changes the other
What is the explanatory variable
The variable you are in control of
What is the response variable
The variable you measure and changes as a result of the explanatory variable
What is a pre test
A trail rim of the experiment on a smaller scale to spot any problems that might occur
What are extraneous variable
Any other variables that could effect the experiment
Why is it important to keep the extraneous variable constant
So they don’t influence the response variable
What are control groups compared to
Experimental groups
How are the control group and experimental group compared
Randomly assign people to 2 different groups
The experimental group is treated and the control group isn’t and is used as a reference
All extraneous variable should be kept constant
What is using a control group good
It lets you see that the effect on the experimental group is due to the explanatory variable
What are matched pairs
Sample members are put into pairs than age as similar as possible
Then one member from each pair is randomly assigned to the control or experimental group
Why are matched pairs useful
Helps reduce variability and increases the reliability of the experiment
Experiments validity is increased
