Exogenic Processes Flashcards
Mechanical Weathering Types
Exfoliation, or peeling effect from intense heating
Block disintegration, successive heating and cooling causes disintegration.
Chemical Weathering Types
Oxidation, rust basically.
Hydrolysis, water is absorbed by mineral in rock.
Erosion!
Can be by wind, sheet (water washes it away in a sheet) or rill (running water digs little canals in it). Glaciers can also pluck or cause abrasion.
Deposition
Basically material is deposited somewhere else after erosion.
Glacial moraine- all sizes, from glacier obvs.
Delta- river meets ocean, new land is formed in distributary channels.
Sand dunes.
Mass Wasting
Gravity did it.
Fall- you know what this is. Free fall of detached individual pieces.
Slides- fairly coherent rock materials sliding down a slope. Translational on well-defined surface, rotational on concave surface.
Flow- saturated with water and move as viscous fluid.
Mass Wasting Flow Types
Slurry, or 20-40% water.
Granular or less than 20% water.
