Endogenic Processes Flashcards
Continental Drift Theory
From Pangaea (“entire world”) pieces split from near equator and drifted away.
First proposed by Abraham Ortelius, but fully developed and considered to be proposed by Alfred Wegener.
Continent drift believed to have hand in mountain formation.
Plate Tectonic Theory
Seven major plates. One per continent!
Hot material from mantle is forced up to lithosphere, as it reaches destination, litho moves horizontally, taking plates with it.
Tectonic Processes
Folding, occurs when rocks are pushed TOWARDS each other from opposite sides. Produces anticlines to make mountains or synclines to make valleys.
Faulting/shearing, rock layers slip and slide over one another along break.
Boundary Types
Convergent, divergent, transform fault.
Convegent Boundary
Move towards each other. Heavier one subducts.
Divergent Boundary
Two plates move away.
Transform Fault Boundary
Slide horizontally past one another.
Tectonic Forces
Compression, Tension, Shearing.
Diastrophism
Slow movement of Earth from high pressure and temperature beneath surface. Causes crust material to move, and rock to be bent or broken due to plate tectonic or rise of magma.
Occurs on continental and oceanic crust.
