Define exercise dependence?
“Exercise addiction is characterized by
dependency on physical activity in one or more
of its forms, and by withdrawal symptoms if
participation is denied. Dependency manifests itself in excessive dominance of exercise in everyday life, often to the detriment of other facets such as the family, social contacts or

What did Lichtenstein et al. (2013) find in their study?
exercise addiction is separate to an eating disorder, but shares some of the concerns of body and performance. It is driven by a striving for high goals and excitement
which results in pain and injuries from overuse.
What is Primary exercise dependence
an independent disorder
What is Secondary exercise
dependence
secondary to an eating disorder
What did Hall et al. (2009, p. 35 find?
The findings from the present study indicate that both self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism may be critical antecedents of [primary] exercise dependence, but that the psychological mechanisms underpinning their association with exercise dependence may differ
What did Hausenblas & Fallon (2002) say?
Healthy exercise is associated with improved body image but the association between exercise dependence and body image was equivocal.
