What is the Medical model of disability
Individual model of disability
–Historically dominant model
–“Inability to perform a task considered ‘normal’ for any person due to impairment”
•Disability caused by parts of the body that do not work properly
What are some strengths of the medical model?
Aim is to eliminate disease or impairment to restore function
•Where possible we do want people to recover
•Drives research agenda on rehabilitation, cure and technology
What are some limitations of the medical model?
- Normal/abnormal dualism
- Physical tragedy or psychological trauma to be overcome
- Locates problem of disability within the individual
- Responsible for own health
- Burden on society
What is the Social model of disability?
Consequence/problem of society
–Rejects link between impairment and disability
•Social restrictions/barriers imposed upon people with impairment
–Develop social policies and practices that facilitate full social inclusion and citizenship
What is some strengths of the Social model of disability?
Heart of disabled people’s movement in UK (DDA, 1995, Equality Act 2010)
•Law – equal access and inclusion within society
•Society is the problem
•Solutions found outside disabled people’s bodies
What is some limitations of the Social model of disability?
Conceptually separating impairment from disability
•Ignores people’s lived experiences of disability
•Disregards individual needs
•Barrier free world not possible
•Disablist values within society unchallenged
what are some benefits of Physical activity?
Greater functional capacity (ease of transfer)
–Reduce depression, increase life satisfaction and well-being
What is Autonomy?
Having independence, choice and control
What is mastery?
Experiencing achievement/competence/sense of accomplishment, self efficacy
