Exercise 13: Catalase and Oxidase Tests Flashcards
1
Q
Catabolism
A
breakdown of biochemicals to generate energy
2
Q
Catalase
A
- enzyme that detoxifies some of the harmful oxygen products
- present in bacteria that undergo cellular respiration
3
Q
Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
A
- harmful oxygen products
- hydroxyl radical (OH*)
- superoxide radical (O2*-)
- hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
4
Q
Positive results (catalase)
A
- Staphylococcus and Micrococcus
- produce oxygen bubbles within seconds of reaction
5
Q
Negative results (catalase)
A
- Enterococcus
- no bubbles
6
Q
Oxidase
A
- is used in this lab to detect the presence of cytochrome c in the ETC.
- An oxidase swab coated with chromogenic reducing agent TMPD is used to swab the unknown colony on the TSA plate
- swab will turn blue if positive
7
Q
Neisseria
A
- N. gonorrhoeae –> gonorrhea
- N. meningitidis –> meningitis
8
Q
Vibrio
A
-V. cholerae –> cholera
9
Q
Acinetobacter
A
oxidase negative, catalase positive
-causes nosocomial infections and foodborne diseases
10
Q
Aeromonas
A
oxidase positive, catalase positive
-causes gastroenteritis, traveler’s diarrhea, wound infections, septicemia, respiratory infections, etc.
