Exercise 12: Aerotolerance Flashcards
Aerotolerance
the ability or inability of microbes to grow in the presence of oxygen
Thioglycollate Agar Deep
one method of determining aerotolerance
Resazurin
- redox indicator added to medium
- a clear to red color change will indicate the absence or presence of dissolved oxygen in medium
Obligate aerobes
require oxygen and will only grow in presence of oxygen (Micrococcus luteus)
Facultative anaerobes
prefer the presence of oxygen but will grow quite well in absence of oxygen (E. coli)
Obligate anaerobes
will not grow in presence of oxygen because oxygen is toxic to them (Clostridium sporogenes)
Aerotolerant Anaerobes
prefer anaerobic conditions but oxygen is not toxic to them
Microaerophiles
prefer a slightly lower atmospheric oxygen tension
