Excretion Flashcards
Define deamination
The removal of the nitrogen-containing part of the amino acids to form urea
Advantages of kidney transplant
Normal life
Not dependent on a machine
Continuous filtration
No restricted diet
No long-term pain and discomfort
Advantages of dialysis
No donor
Dialysis machine cannot be rejected
Lifesaver if transplant is not possible
Disadvantages of kidney transplant
Body could reject the kidney
Immunosuppressant drugs
Vulnerable immunity
Risk of operation
Difficult to find suitable donor
Donor kidney lifetime: 10 to 15 years
Expensive
Disadvantages of dialysis
Time consuming
No normal life
Close to hospitals at all times
Shortage of machines
Expensive
Loss of some minerals
No sport
Controlled diet
No continuous filtration
How dialysis works
Blood Extraction: Blood is taken from the patient through the vascular access point and pumped into the machine.
Filtration in Dialyzer: The blood passes through the dialyzer where toxins and excess fluids cross the membrane into the dialysate fluid, which is later discarded.
Return to Body: The filtered blood is then returned to the body.
What is dialysis?
Life-support treatment which results in the purification of blood
