Exchange Surfaces 4 Key Words Flashcards
Integumentary system
Organ system including skin and appendages, protect body from damage (dehydration, pathogen invasion)
Oral side
Gill face closest to mouth
Aboral side
Gill face furthest from mouth (closest to external environment)
Operculum
Bony plate covering gills
Primary lamellae (gill filaments)
Very thin filament found along gill arch. Surface folded into secondary lamellae
Ventral aorta
Artery carrying blood from ventricles to arteries supplying gill arches
Dorsal aorta
Major artery carries oxygenated blood from gill arches to body organs
Buccal cavity
Cavity inside mouth, above gill arches, aka mouth cavity
Counter current
mechanism of fluid flow in opposite directions, in fish important for O2 conc gradient maintenance
Buccal-opercular pump
Aka respiratory pump. Caused by buccal and opercular cavity volume
changes, keeps oxygenated water flowing over gills
