Exchange Surfaces 2 Key Words Flashcards
Pleural sac/visceral pleura
Envelopes the lung
Parietal pleura
Lines ribcage, covers upper surface of diaphragm
Pleural fluid
Found between inner and outer pleura, reduces friction
Simple cuboidal epithelial cells
Epithelial cells lining bronchioles. Wide as tall with central nucleus.
Squamous epithelium
Epithelial tissue lining alveoli
Phrenic nerve
Mixed motor/sensory nerve originates from C3-C5 spinal nerves in neck. Important for breathing, provides exclusive motor control of diaphragm
Autonomic motor system
largely unconscious control system:
regulates bodily functions (heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, pupillary response, urination & sexual arousal)
External intercostal muscles
Responsible for rib elevation and opening to expand transverse dimensions of thoracic cavity
Internal intercostal muscles
Responsible for rib depression, bending inwards
Thoracic cavity
aka chest cavity, vertebrate cavity bound by ribcage on sides and top, and diaphragm on bottom. Bound by thoracic vertebrae connected to ribs surrounding cavity
