Cell Structure 1 Key Words Flashcards
Eukaryote
Multicellular organisms like animals plants and fungi or single-celled protoctista
Prokaryote
single-celled prokaryotic organisms from the kingdom Prokaryotae
Centriole
component of the cytoskeleton of most eukaryotic cells, composed of microtubules
Peptidoglycan
constituent of the cell wall of prokaryotic cells (sometimes known as murein) which forms outside the plasma membrane of most bacteria.
Ribosomes
The site of protein synthesis. They are constructed of RNA molecules made in the nucleolus of the cell.
Lysosomes
Specialised vesicles containing hydrolytic enzymes for the breakdown of waste materials within a cell
Ultrastructure
the features of a cell that can be seen by using an electron microscope
Resolution
The shortest distance between objects that can still be seen as separate objects.
Exocytosis
The bulk transport of materials out of cells. Vesicles containing the material fuse with the cell-surface membrane and the contents are released to the outside of the cell.
Golgi apparatus
organelle in most eukaryotic cells formed from an interconnected network of flattened, membrane-enclosed sacs, or cisternae. They play a role in modifying and packaging proteins into vesicles
