Which aphasia is classified as expressive aphasia?
Nonfluent aphasia (Broca’s motor aphasia, expressive aphasia)
What is nonfluent (Broca’s, expressive) aphasia?
Language disorder.
Speech is awkward, restricted, interrupted and produced with effort
What is the etiology of nonfluent aphasia (Broca’s or expressive aphasia)
Lesion involving the third frontal convolution of the left hemisphere (Broca’s area)
What is verbal apraxia?
Impairment of volitional articulately control secondary to cortical, dominant hemisphere lesion
What is dysarthria?
- Impairment of speech production resulting form damage ot the central or peripheral nervous systems
- Causes weakness, paralysis or incoordination of the motor-speech system (respiration, articulation, phonation and movements of jaw and tongue)
When assess receptive function what should a therapist examine?
Comprehension
What aphasia is considered a receptive aphasia?
Fluent aphasia (wernicke’s and receptive aphasia)
What is a fluent aphasia?
- central language disorder
- spontaneous speech is preserved and flows smoothly
3 auditory comprehension is impaired
What causes fluent aphasia?
Lesion in the posterior first temporal gryrus of the L hemisphere (wernicke’s area)
A therapist should assess what to determine if global aphasia is present?
Marked impairments in comprehension and production of language
