What is important to ask about pain
duration and its quality e.g. aching sharp burning
and the degree to which it is affravated by external factors
What is the difference between pain and tenderness
pain is a symptom and tenderness is a physical sign

How should palpation begin
by identifying the characteristic bony landmarks of the part
What should be noted about any swelling
size position shape consistency fluctuation position in relation to the various issue planes and its attachments are particularly important i.e. bone,muscle tendon, skin
What should be noted when passively examining a joint
quality of movements - is it smooth and pregressive or rough and crepitant
is there a catch
How can we test a ligament
when the muscle is totally relaxed
What are some causes of restriction of movements
mechanical block soft tissue contracture effusion paralysis spasm and pain spasticity
What is a deformity of a joint
a joint which cannot be put into the anatomical position
How is a deformity of a joint named
according to the direction in which the joint is bent - flexion deformity, adduction deformity etc.
