Exam III: FA Lameness I & II Flashcards

Applegate

1
Q

For Anatomy & Diagnosis of Lameness, Can you:
– Describe the distribution of weight bearing in the front and hind feet?

A

in the bovines, they weight bear on the medial digit in the front limb and lateral digit in the hindlimb.

Q

For anatomy and diagnosis of lameness, can you:
– Contrast the stance of ruminants with painful medial claws with that of ruminants with painful lateral claws?

A

They will try to off-weight that foot. It looks almost like and internal or external rotation to try to off-load that digit. Or their stance will have the affected limb in front or behind.

Q

For anatomy and diagnosis of lameness can you:
– Describe how to visually identify a swollen foot when viewed from the rear of the animal?

A

The positioning of the dew claws is helpful, when they are separated, you know there is some swelling going on.

Q

For anatomy and diagnosis of lameness, can you:
– Describe how overgrown (untrimmed) feet change the
distribution of weight of the foot, and what diseases can
occur if feet remain untrimmed?

A

The weight of the animal is more towards the front and off the heel, when feet are untrimmed, it makes that weight distribution fall back and the animal becomes more susceptible to pressure necrosis of the heel.

Q

For Digital Dermatitis, Can you:
– Identify a foot with an early (erosive) or an advanced
(papillomatous) lesion of digital dermatitis?

A

More likely the lesion occurs on the plantar and palmar aspect of the foot in the interdigital skin or the skin jsut above the heel bulb. It starts as a red, eroded granular lesion and can progress to exudative and matted hairs on the periphery. Lesion ends up looking like a big wart.

If it occurs on the front foot, it is usually on the dorsal surface.

there will be no edma or generalized swelling, dew claws will not be spread apart.
due to toe touching, hoof can be misshapen (short rounded toes, longer heel)

Q

For digital dermatitis can you:
– Describe the treatment for digital dermatitis and
explain why topical therapy works?

A

Topical therapy works because there is only involvemnt of the epidermis. It is a polybacterial disease but we know treponema spp. is involved.

isolate if possible, topical anitspetics or antibiotics under a light bandage (topical oxytet, parenteral antibiotics may work but then have to observe WT), flunixin meglumine or aspirin if they are painful

treatment improves in 2-5 days, recurrence is common (infection does not produce protective immunity)

Q

For digital dermatitis can you:
– Describe the preventive measures for digital
dermatitis?

risk factors?

A

spray feet with disinfectant or antiseptic or antibitotic (uaully done at milking parlor), foot baths (make sure you clean off inorganic material first), clean hoof trimming equipment

risk factors include:
poor hygien and wet conditions (manure and urine), early lactation animals (immune suppression of parturition and lactation), introduction of new animals, fomite spread

vaccine ineffective
