Exam II Lecture 6 Palate and Pharynx Flashcards
What are the five muscles of the soft palate?
Levator veli palatini, Tensor veli palatini, Palatopharyngeus, Palatoglossus, Musculus uvulae
Which of the five soft palate muscles is not innervated by the X? What CN is it innervated by?
Tensor veli palatini. Innervated by V3
Which soft palate muscles elevates the palate?
Levator veli palatini
Which soft palate muscles tenses the palate and opens the auditory tube?
Tensor veli palatini
Which two soft palate muscles depress the palate?
Palatopharyngeus (and raises pharynx) and Palatoglossus (and raises tongue)
Blood supply to the palate is provided by what two branches of the external carotid?
Maxillary and Facial
What branches from the maxillary artery provide blood supply to the palate?
Sphenopalatine and descending palatine (further branches into greater and lesser palatine).
What branch from the facial artery provides blood supply to the palate?
Ascending palatine
What CNS nucleus gives rise to the motor fibers of X?
Nucleus Ambiguous
What is the path of the nasopalatine nerve (V2) from the pterygopalatine fossa?
Sphenopalatine foramen –> runs along nasal septum –> exits the incisive foramen
What is the path of the greater palatine nerve (V2) from the pterygopalatine fossa?
Palatine canal –> exits the greater palatine foramen
How do sympathetic fibers get to the palate?
Synapse in cervical ganglia and post-synaptic fibers hitchhike on the internal carotid —> deep petrosal nerve to form the nerve to pterygoid canal—> pterygopalatine fossa —> pass through pterygopalatine ganglion –> jump onto greater and lesser palatine and nasopalatine nerves to the palate
In what nucleus do parasympathetic fibers of VII originate?
Superior Salivatory Nucleus.
Where do the pre-ganglionic parasympathetic fibers of VII synapse?
Pterygopalatine ganglion and submandibular ganglion
The post-ganglionic parasympathetic fibers of VII use what nerve branches to hitchhike to the palate?
Greater/lesser palatine and nasopalatine
