Exam I-In class Activities-xerostomia & ulcers Flashcards
What is the classification of SAL-MET-EROL?
A LONG acting Beta-2 Agonist
How does SalMetErol lead to Xerstomia?
Stimulation of the Sympathetic Nervous system(beta-2 agonist) will cause less salivation and more mucus salivation
What class of drug is Ipra-Tro-Pium? How does it cause dry mouth?
Anti-Muscarinic. Blocking parasympathetic activity blocks normal watery saliva production. Sympathetic NS runs unopposed.
What class of drug is Oxy-But-y-NIN? How does it cause dry mouth?
Anti-Muscarinic-Pill form will block M3 receptors on salivary glands and the sym ns runs unopposed
How does Benedryl cause dry mouth?
the anti-histamine CROSS reacts with muscarinic receptors (especially high dose) causing blockage of the parasym activity
What class of drug is Hydro-Chloro-Thi-Azide? How does it cause dry mouth?
A diuretic, causes dry mouth through dehydration
What class of drug is Phenyl-Eph-Rine? How does it cause dry mouth?
A Alpha-1 Adrenergic Agonist in sudafed. Binding to alpha-1’s causes vasoconstriciton to the salivary glands which means less saliva!
What class of drug is Benz-Trop-Ine? How does it cause dry mouth?
An Anti-Muscarinic for the Brain (treats Parkinsons-LATE stage).
What type of drug is Pilo-Carpine? How does it relieve dry mouth?
Its a ParasympathoMimetic (muscarinic agonist). Promotes parasym activity and therefore more saliva!
What class of drug is Cev-I-Mel-ine? how does it relieve dry mouth?
A parasymphatoMimic to enhance saliva production
How does Biotene help relieve dry mouth?
Wettens the mouth and balances pH
What is the most likely reason why a Pt would have Candadisis while using Fluticasone & Albuterol?
Both are oral steroids and are suppressing the immune system when getting stuck in the mouth. Try a spacer, rinse after inhaling, or powder inhaler.
What class of drug is Keto-pro-fen? How would it lead to an ulcer?
An NSAID (an intense Ibuprofen). NSAIDs are COX inhibitors that block not only inflammatory prostaglandin production, but also physiological prostaglandins (COX-1 and COX-2). Prostaglandin is a Mucus stimulant, block it you block Mucus production.
How would you treat a Pt with an Ulcer while on Warfarin?
Use a different NSAID like Tylenol (not a COX inhibitor)
What class of drug is Clar-ithro-mycin? How does it work?
Its a MacroLide(antibiotic) -it targets bacterial ribosomes and stops protein production
What class of drug is Amoc-i-cillin? How does it work?
Its a Penecillin-stops bacterial cell wall production.
What class of drug is Eso-Mep-Razole? How does it work?
A PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor). Stopping acid production in the Parietal Cells of the stomach.
What three drugs are used in Triple Therapy? For what condition?
Peptic Ulcer Disease..2 AntiBiotics (H. Pylori is TOUGH) and a PPI.
What class of drug is Ran-it-id-ine? How does it fight ulcers?
It is a Histamine receptor blocker. Blocking histamine blocks one stimulant on Paritetal cells to produce H+
Why would just taking Tums not really treat PUD?
It is merely neutralizing Acid already made. It is not addressing the H. Pylori and it is not slowing down acid production.
