Exam 3- Types of bone Flashcards
Long bone
Humerus, femur
Short Bone
Carpals, tarsals
Flat bones
Scapula, plates of skull
Irregular bones
Vertebrae, coccyx
Sesamoid bones
patella
Diaphysis
Main shaft. Hollow, cylindrical shape, made of compact bone with yellow matter
Epiphyses
Both ends, bulbous shape, made of cancellous (spongy) bone, filled with red marrow. Epiphysial plate (growth place)
Articular Cartilage
Layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the articular surface of epiphyses
Medullary Cavity
Tubelike, hollow space in the diaphyses. Yellow marrow in adults
Periosteum
Dense, white fibrous connective tissue that covers bone.
Continuous with ligaments and tendons
contains osteoblasts and osteoclasts
Endosteum
thin, fibrous, membrane
lines the medullary cavity (diploid. ((between two bones)))
Parts of a flat bone
cancellous bone covered with compact bone
inner cancellous region called the diploe
covered by periosteum
Osteogenesis
Development of bone
Endochondral ossification
from cartilage to bone (mineralization)
Osteoblasts (development)
are clustered together in ossification center where they secrete matrix and collagenous fibrils
