Virus infects respiratory epithelial cells, release chemokines and inflammatory mediators (casuses symptoms)
Cold vs Flu
Flu symptoms
- more sudden onset
- less nasal symptoms
- higher fever
- extreme tiredness
- dry cough
- aches and chills common
*flu peaks in feb (can start oct - may)
Complications of untreated cold
Sinusitis
Eustachian tube obstructions (ear infxn)
bronchitis, bacterial pneumonia
asthma or COPD exacerbations

False - fever <101.5 is a self-care exclusion

Evidence does not support effectiveness of antitussives, exportants, or 2nd gen for symptoms of common cold
Most likely cause of cough = UACS, 1st gen antihsitamine and decongestant may be effective
Treatment: OTC
Echinacea, Zinc, Vit C, Airborne, Emergen-C, Immune+
