Abbev to know: SMI
Soft mist inhaler
Asthma med term: wheeze
high pitched noise usually heard upon exhalation
Asthma med term: “Personal Best” Peak Expiratory Flow
highest peak flow reading you can achieve when your asthma is under good control; used in conjunction with an asthma action plan to assess severity and guide therapeutic decisions
Astham med term: Exercise induced bronchospasm (EIB)
Exercise-induced bronchospasm which can be pre-treated with certain bronchodilators
Asthma med term: Bronchial Hyper-responsiveness (BHR)
Increased sensitivity of the airways to narrow in response to various stimuli
Asthma med term: Atopy
a genetic predisposition for the development of IgE-mediated response to common aeroallergens
Eczema
AR
Allergic Conjunctivitis
Asthma Phenotypes (5)
- allergic asthma
- non-allergic asthma
- Adult-onset asthma
- Asthma with persistent airflow limitation
- asthma with obesity
Asthma RF: Host factors
Innate immunity (hygiene hypothesis)
Genetics
Age (younger)
Sex
Asthma RF: Environmental factors
Allergens (animal dander, cockroach allergen, house dust-mite)
Pollution (occupational, environmental, tobacco)
Infections
Microbes
Stress
Asthma RF: Other
Ethnicity
Urbanization
Socioeconomic status
Pathophysiology
TH2»_space; generates cytokines (IL4, IL5, IL13) + stimulate B lymphocytes to produce IgE antibodies»_space; activate mast cells»_space;release eosinophil»_space; release inflammatory mediators (histamine, PG and LT)
Features less likely to be asthma
Isolated cough with no other respiratory symptom, chronic sputum production, SOB associated with dizziness, light headedness, peripheral tingling, or exercise-induced dyspnea w noisy inspiration
FENO Tests
Useful in supporting asthma diagnosis and indicating Type 2 (T2) inflammation of airway
FENO >50 ppb (or >35ppb in children 5-12) support diagnosis of asthma and indicate T2 inflammation
Levels impacted by smoking and atopic conditions
