Exam 3 : Adipose Tissue: Anatomy & Development Flashcards
1
Q
Where can Adipose tissue be found?
A
- In the Visceral (Hidden fat)
- Perinephric or pericardial (V)
- Omental or Mesenteric (V)
- Subcutaneous
- Intermuscular
- Intramuscular
V stand for the visceral fat
2
Q
Where can one found Perinephric or pericardial fat?
A
- Arround the kidneys
- Pelvis
- Heart
3
Q
Where can Omental or mesenteric fat be found?
A
Found surrounding gastrointenstinal tract
4
Q
Where can subcutaneous fat be found?
Where can Intermuscular be found?
Where can intramuscular be found?
A
- External fat under skin
- Fat between muscles
- Fat within muscle (marbling)
5
Q
What are the characteristics of White adipose tissue?
A
- Predominant fat in the body
- Long term energy storage
- Less vascularity
- Few cytoplasmic inclusions
- Poorly developed mitochondria
- After Lipolysis, fatty acids released from cell unlike brown adipose where fatty acids turned into heat inside cell.
6
Q
What are characteristics of Brown adipose tissue?
A
- Extensive vascularity
- High #’s of iron containing mitochondria, hence brown color
- Common in neonates, hibernating animals, cold adapted animals
7
Q
What is non-shivering thermogenesis?
A
- Increase in metabolic heat production
- Not associated with muscle activity
- Conducted by brown fat
- Fatty acids converted to HEAT in adipose tissue due to uncoupling protein 1, allows uncoupling of oxidation from ATP formation
8
Q
When it comes to WAT and BAT what are their differences?
A
- WAT is white, BAT is brown
- WAT has a few vascularization, BAT has more sympathetic vascularization
- WAT has less active metabolic activity, BAT has a high active metabolic activity
- WAT has less sympathetic innervation, BAT has more sympathetic innervation
