EXAM 2 - Nervous System: Brain Flashcards
Name 4 x Lobes
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
(Plus cerebellum and Limbic Systems)
Gyri
Ridges
Sulci
Shallow grooves
Fissures
Deep grooves
Ventricles
Fluid-filled chambers (filled with CSF)
- lined with ependymal cells
- C-shaped chambers deep in each hemisphere
Frontal Lobe - Cortex & function
Cortex: Primary Motor Cortex
Function:
- Voluntary control of skeletal muscles
- somatic motor cortex
- Motor speech area
- Premotor area
- Seat of intelligence & abstract reasoning
Parietal Love - Cortex & Function
Cortex: Primary Somatosensory Cortex
Function:
- Conscious perception of touch, pressure, pain, vibration, taste & temperature
- Primary sensory cortex
- THINK: Sensation, not senses
Occipital Lobe - Cortex & Function
Cortex: Visual Cortex
Function:
- Conscious perception of visual stimuli
Temporal Lobe - Cortex & function
Cortex: Auditory cortex & Olfactory cortex
Function:
- Conscious perception of auditory (hearing) and olfactory (smell) stimuli
4 x Main Brain Regions
- Cerebrum (divided into 2 x hemispheres, has 4 x lobes, cortex is outer part)
- Cerebellum
- Diencephalon
- Brain stem
Hypothalamus
Part of Diencephalon region
- ANS control centre
- Secretes hormones
- regulates many internal functions (maintains homeostasis
Thalamus
Conveys sensory information (except smell) ascending to the cerebral cortex
- ‘relay centre for all sensory impulses except smell’
Epithalamus
- Associated with pineal gland
- Secretes melatonin to induce sleep
Medulla Oblongata
- Autonomic reflex centre involved in maintaining body homeostasis
- maintains CV centre, respiratory centres, sneezing, hiccups, vomiting, swallowing coughing
Pons
- secondary respiratory Centre
- helps medulla oblongata maintain normal rhythm of breathing
