What is nephrolithiasis

pelvis- stones
ureter- pregnancy, tumor
bladder- cancer, neurogenic bladder, prostate (not stones- too big)
complications of obstructions
urinary stasis –> infection
back up pressure –> hydroureter and hydronephrosis
what creates a kidney stone
super-saturation of solutes in kidneys
risk factors for nephrolithiasis
dehydration
gout
urinary stasis–> immobility/obesity

types of stones (3)
- calcium- most common
- sturvite AKA staghorn
- uric acid
causes of different types of kidney stones
calcium- idiopathic/diet
sturvite- UTIs
uric acid- gout
S/S of nephrolithaisis
renal colic
flank pain
radiation to back/stomach
spasms
sharp
fever/chills- w/ systemic infection
N/V/D
treatment for nephrolithiasis
pain meds
- morphine / opioids
- NSAIDS
IV fluids
Preventative meds for stone types
-calcium- thiazide diuretics
-struvite- antibiotics
uric acid- allopurinol
