Exam 2 lipids Flashcards
HDL or LDL good?
HDL = good, want high levels LDL= bad
lipoprotein lipase does what
removes triglycerides from chylomicron
what is main drug for cholesterol
statin
what do statin drugs do?
they inhibit HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, thereby reducing cholesterol biosynthesis and REDUCEING LDL
Nicotinic acid is an inhibitor of
hormone sensitive lipase, thereby it reduce hydrolysis of triglycerides in fat and prevents its elevation in serum
PCSK9 inhibitor
an antibody that prevents LDL receptor degradation – so they can continue to suck LDL out of blood and reduce it
what are the two omega 3 fatty acids?
1) EPA -eicosapentaenoic acid
2) DHA -docosahexaenoic acid
omega 3 FA mechanism of action
decrease triglycerides as compared to cholesterol and inhibit the oxidation of LDL
bile acid
Give examples of drugs
decrease cholesterol- 95% reabsorbed
Ex: choletyramine, colestipol, colesevelam
statin drugs interact with what drug and do what to muscle?
myopathy– bc inhibit CYP3A4
interact with diltiazem (Ca+ channel blocker)
most prescribed fibric acid drug?
gemfibrozil (Lopid)
- lowers VLDL which lowers triglyceride
niacin
Vit B complex
- causes pruritus (itching)
list the 3 triglyceride and 3 cholesterol lipid-altering agent
Triglyceride
- omega 3 FA (EPA/DHA)
- Niacin
- Fibric acids
Cholesterol
- Statin
- Bile acid sequestrants
- Ezetimibe
