Exam 1 Review (LO's) Flashcards
Where is the Basement Membrane located?
sits between Epidermis and Dermis
What are the 2 layers of the basement membrane? describe them
Papillary Layer (layer closest to the epidermis) has loose network of connective tissue, has a network of elastic fibers, and an abundance of capillaries.
Reticular Layer: (Deepest dermis layer)
dense irregular connective tissue
Includes fibrocytes, macrophages, and adipocytes (some more than others)
What is an easy was to tell if skin is thick skin or thin skin?
thick skin has no hair follicles
Define Superficial Fascia:
(subcutaneous fascia, hypodermis, SubQ) loose bundles of collagen and elastic fibers with variably sized adipose tissue deposits.
Supports cutaneous nerves and blood vessels
Define Deep Fascia
(Membranous fascia, Investing Fascia: because it holds muscle bundles together) several thin layers of tough collagen material that in some places is tightly adherent to muscles, tendons, and bones.
Define merocrine glands and give an example
secretion is thin and watery, and the cell is not damaged during secretion
ex. Sudoriferous glands (sweat glands)
Long, simple, and tubula
Define Apocrine Glands and give an example
secretion is thicker and more viscous; adrenergic innervation, not active until puberty
ex. Ceruminous glands, glands of moll, and are found on labia majora, areola, axillary, and anal regions
Define the matrix of hair follicles
a mass of mitotically active cells that are producing hair cells that die and keratinize on the way out of the follicle
Define Dermal Papilla
sits beneath the matrix
Compare and contrast lanugo and vellus
lanugo: the earliest detectable, fine embryonic hairs
Vellus: new, downy coat of hairs everywhere that forms a few months after birth
Turns to terminal hair during puberty
What is another word for nails? what layer are they derived from? how are they related to lateral grooves?
ungis ; modified stratum corneum ; lateral grooves guide ungis growth along the nail bed
Define Melanocytes and at what depth are they found
cells that create melanin; more of them in darker skinned people
Found in the deep layers of the epidermis
Derived from nervous system components
Define langerhans cells and what layer are they found in?
(Dendritic cells): antigen-presenting cells that are derived from monocytes
Primarily found in the stratum spinosum (spines to fight antigens to remem.)
Migrate from the epidermis to the lymph nodes
Define Merkel Cells and what layer they are commonly found in
mechanoreceptors that use meissner’s corpuscles/ pacini corpuscles to detect mechanical pressure
Usually in stratum germinativum
What are the 3 types of protein fibers in CT cells?
Collagen
Elastic
Reticular
