How many vertebrae are there for each section of the vertebral column?
Cervical (7), Thoracic (12), Lumbar (5), Sacrum (5 segments), Coccyx (4 segments).
Name some distinguishing features of cervical vertebrae.
Smaller, Bifid Spinous Process, Triangular Foramen Magnum, Transverse Foramina are present
Name some distinguishing features of thoracic vertebrae.
Medium sized, Circular Foramen Magnum, Spinous Process is long and sloping inferior (no space between vertebrae), 2 costal facets on body, long transverse process with foramina
Name some distinguishing features of lumbar vertebrae.
Large body, Triangular Foramen Magnum, Short spinous process that points posteriorly, Transverse process more slender, space between vertebrae (good for LP’s), no costal facets
Name some distinguishing features of C1 (atlas).
No body. Ring-like. Has anterior and posterior arch. Has two lateral masses.
Name some distinguishing features of C2 (axis).
Dens acts as a pivot point for C1 and the attached head to rotate side to side. 2 large Superior Articular Facets lateral to the dens. Bifid Spinous Process.
