What are the characteristics of the Alpha Glucosidase Inhibitors?

A

● Not hypoglycemic agent
● MOA : Competitive, reversible inhibition of intestinal alpha­-glucosidases to prevent breakdown of complex carbohydrates ( delay digestion of carbs, delay glucose absorption)
● Smaller rise in blood glucose conc.
● Do not affect glucose, lactose, or fructose absorption

What are the characteristics of Acarbose ( Precose ) and Miglitol ( Glyset )?

A

● Taken TID with 1st bite of each meal (these agents are used to reduce post­prandial glycemia)
● Modest therapeut. action (does not greatly lower HbA1c)
● Prevent sucrose breakdown (only glucose or dextrose can be used if hypoglycemia is present)
● S.E . = gas
● Poorly tolerated! (gas)
● Contraindicated in IBS and obstruction
