Exam 1 - Alpha Glucosidase Inhibitors Flashcards
What are the characteristics of the Alpha Glucosidase Inhibitors?
● Not hypoglycemic agent
● MOA : Competitive, reversible inhibition of intestinal alpha-glucosidases to prevent breakdown of complex carbohydrates ( delay digestion of carbs, delay glucose absorption)
● Smaller rise in blood glucose conc.
● Do not affect glucose, lactose, or fructose absorption
Which are the Alpha Glucosidase Inhibitor drugs?
Acarbose ( Precose )
Miglitol ( Glyset )
What are the characteristics of Acarbose ( Precose ) and Miglitol ( Glyset )?
● Taken TID with 1st bite of each meal (these agents are used to reduce postprandial glycemia)
● Modest therapeut. action (does not greatly lower HbA1c)
● Prevent sucrose breakdown (only glucose or dextrose can be used if hypoglycemia is present)
● S.E . = gas
● Poorly tolerated! (gas)
● Contraindicated in IBS and obstruction
