Evolution, Population Dynamics Flashcards
gene flow
alterations to composition of gene pool due to migrations
directional selection
one extreme is favored, so that population starts to express that extreme phenotype more often
assortative mating
when mates are not chosen randomly, certain individuals are selected over others
genetic drift
changes in a gene pool due to random chance
analogous structure
a structure is evolved separately from two different lineages (wings for insects and birds)
close evolutionary relationship
recent common ancestor; similar embryonic development; similar genes for ribosomes
adaptive radiation
when one lineage diverts into many as isolated populations occupy different niches
bottleneck effect
when a large population is drastically reduced; similar to founder effect
pre-zygotic reproductive isolation (5 types)
- temporal - mating patterns different in timing
- place - location
- behavioral - they don’t attract each other
- mechanical - the parts don’t fit
- gametic isolation - fertilization is impossible
TPBMG
post-zygotic reproductive isolation (3 types)
- zygote mortality - the zygote dies
- hybrid inviability - the organism is born but doesn’t mature
- hybrid sterility - hybrid won’t produce offspring
