Evolution Day-6 Flashcards
What is the bottle neck effect?
A type of genetic drift, in which a large population declines in number leading to decreased genetic diversity.
What is the Hardy-Weinberg condition that is not statistically significant in a short time span?
Mutations. In short time span, they do not statistically change a population.
What is genetic drift?
Genetic drift is when the allele frequencies within a population change randomly with no advantage to the population over existing allele frequencies.
Hardy-Weinberg condition that is significant in small populations. Populations that are too small lead to a decrease in genetic diversity
What is inbreeding depression?
It is when individuals with similar genotypes - typically relatives - breed with each other and produce offspring that have an impaired ability to survive and reproduce
What are the 2 types of genetic drift?
The Bottle Neck Effect
The Founder Effect
What is the founder effect?
The founder effect is a type of genetic drift where a species moves to and colonizes a new area, and does not mingle with other populations. (Finland; blue eyes, blonde hair)
