ECOlogy-Lecture 2 Flashcards
What arethe physical factors that affect terrestrial biomes? And which is most important?
- Temperature
- Precipitation
3. Evapotransporation
What is evapotranspiration?
Evaporation from plants transferred to the land and atmosphere
What are the physical factors that affect aquatic biomes?
1. Light
- Temperature
- Depth
- Substrate type (salty, fresh)
Where is the thermolcline located?
Between the photic and dysphotic (twilight) zone
What are the layers of the aquatic biome?
- Photic zone- 99% light
- Dysphotic zone (twilight)- 0-1% light
- Aphotic Zone (abyssal)
What are the marine zonations?
Starting from the shore…
- Intertidal zone
- Neritic zone
- Oceanic zone
Describe the temperate forest
Deciduous trees
Describe the boreal forest
Coniferous trees (pine/Christmas), long cold winters, cool summers
Describe the tropical wet forest
Poor soil quality, layers of tree canopy, warm and moist
Describe the savana
Grass, small trees, warm, wet and dry seasons
Describe the subtropical desert
Xeric plants (cacti), low rain, very hot
Describe the Chaparral (scrub forest)
Shrubs and dry plants
Describe the temperate grasslands
Dominated by grass and large grazing animals
Describe the tundra
Low growing forbs, soil is frozen (permafrost), wolf, caribou
Describe the intertidal biome
rocky sand, wave action, debris and pollution
