Evolution (7th) Flashcards
Scientists use ________ to obtain information about how species evolved.
Fossils
What did Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution say?
That related species have similar body structures and patterns of development because they inherit many of the same genes.
What is evolution?
A gradual change in heredity features of species overtime.
What is the definition of species?
A group of organisms whose members look alike and successfully reproduce among themselves.
What is Natural Selection?
Individuals with traits more favorable for a specific environment survive and pass these traits onto their offspring.
What is variation?
In appearance of an inherited trait that makes an individual different from other members of the same species.
What is gradualism?
States that evolution is a slow change of one species to another new species.
What are fossils?
Any remains of life from an earlier time.
What is sedimentary rock?
A rock formed by mud, sand, or other fine particles that settle out of a liquid. Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock.
What is relative dating?
A method of dating fossils which can states that fossils found in the lowest layers of rocks are older than those in upper layers.
What is radioactive dating?
A method used to give a more accurate age to rock layer or fossil
*carbon
____ ________ __ _______ proposed a theory saying what? (It was false)
Jean Baptiste de Lamarck proposed that species keep traits that their parents developed. (Acquired characteristics) it was WRONG
What is adaptation?
A structure or behavior that helps a species survive.
