Classification (7th) Flashcards
What is Taxonomy?
Science of grouping and naming organisms. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, first used taxonomy more than 2000 years ago.
What is a Kingdom?
The largest taxonomic category.
Ex: plant and animal kingdoms created by Aristotle. He then further divided the kingdoms according to where the animals lived. His system was criticized and eventually abandoned.
What is the current system of scientific classification?
Binomial Nomenclature
_______ __________ created B.N. To classify organisms based on a variety of traits.
Carolus Linnaeus
What’s a word that means “two names”
Binomial
What does binomial mean?
“Two names”
The two word scientific name is usually in _____.
Latin
The 1st word is
The genus (always capitalized)
The 2nd word is
The species (always lowercase)
Both words of the two word scientific name is always written
