evolution Flashcards
evolution
change in a population over time
criteria for natural selection
1 variation i the population
2 competition for resources
3those wight the best fit traits will survive and reproduce
adaptation
a genetic trait that helps an organism survive and/or reproduce in its environment
descent with modification
all organisms today evolved from a common ancestor.
ways of evidence for evolution
fossil records, comparative anatomy, genetics, embryology, geographic distribution on species, antibiotic resistance
fossil record
fossils show that life is old and has changed over time
transition species
fossils that show the link between old and new species
vestigial organs
left over organs from ancestors that we no longer use but still have, example: wisdom teeth, appendix
homologous structure
structures built the same but have different functions
ex; whale fin, bat wing, human arm
shows ancestry
embryology
early embryos of different species have similar features, ex fish and humans have tails and gils
genetic proof of evolution
best way to show– closely related species share DNA codes ex: humans and chimps share 98.8%
analogous structures
structures have same function but different structure, does not show ancestry
but shows that environments select for certain trays– dolphin and shark fins
