Evidence Of Inequality for Young people Flashcards
Workplace= The Equality Trust
Young people have faced tough conditions for the past decade, with rising rental, housing, and accommodation costs.
Workplace= Ritzer
Young people often have zero-hour contracts and work in what Ritzer calls ‘McJobs’—unstimulating, low-wage jobs with few benefits, especially in the service industry.
Health= Youngpeopleshealth.org.uk
75% of mental health issues start before age 24, yet only 0.7% of NHS funding is spent on young people’s mental health.
Health= The Guardians
By 2037, the number of family carers is expected to rise from 6.5 million to 9 million due to an ageing population. Young people may soon be asked to care for their parents unpaid when cash-strapped councils can’t provide support.
Media= Cohen
He discussed how youths are negatively labeled in the media, like the Mods and Rockers. They are called ‘folk devils’ who threaten society’s morals, which can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy where youths act according to the label.
Media= Griffin
He stated that youths are labeled by the media in three ways:
Dysfunctional (they don’t ‘function’ effectively)
Suffering a Deficit (acting hard-done-by, e.g., financially, due to things like higher tuition fees)
Deviant (breaking norms and laws).
These labels can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy and negative treatment from the public and those in power.
Crime= Youth Endowment Fund
16% of teenage children were victims of violence in the last 12 months, and 47% had either been a victim or witness to violence during the same period.
Crime= Jacobson
He found that three-quarters of children and young people in custody had absent fathers, half grew up in deprived households, and half had run away from care, indicating complex backgrounds.
