What were the Petrograd Soviet?
- assembly of workers representing 96 factories
- included Bolsheviks and Mensheviks - showed that workers could organise themselves into an opposition group
- Closed down by Tsarist troops in December 1905
What took place in Moscow in December 1905?
armed uprisings, resulted in over 1000 dead, bolsheviks played key role in revolt, crushed by Tsarist troops
What were the consequences of the 1905 revolution?
- Tsar signed the October Manifesto
- Tsar no longer had a bond with Russia population
What did the October Manifesto contain?
- promised various political reforms
- It accepted the establishment of a Duma
- acknowledged there should be more political freedoms e.g. speech, assembly, press

How did Russian liberals differ on opinions over the October Manifesto?
- some accepted it as a final piece of political reform
- Kadets saw it as a beginning of political reform

criticised it for being too limited and not meeting their political aims
What happened after the October Manifesto?
- Tsar was able to re-establish his authority
- armed forces remained loyal to Tsar
- Tsar established new political group called the ‘Union of Russian People’ - attacked and killed those who supported reform throughout russia
- Opposition leaders arrested in December 1905 - deprived workers of leadership
What were the weaknesses of the opposition to the Tsar during the 1905 Revolution?
- Opposition groups often divided and poorly organised - made it easier for groups e.g. Black Hundreds to persecute and destroy them
- SR’s, LIberals, Mensheviks, Bolsheviks all had different political beliefs and aims
- October Manifesto increased those divisions
