What were the Cheka?
political police force established by Lenin to help the Communists secure their power in Russia
What was the purpose of the Cheka?
- end the strikes by government workers
- eliminate political opponents of Bolsheviks
- shoot deserters from Red Army
- after Lenin was nearly killed, they carried out Red Terror
- used to check on the loyalty of party members
- used to spread fear
What was Red Terror?
carried out by the Cheka - anyone who criticised the government could be arrested, and many people were shot without trial

- nationalisation of the banks
