Evaluation Of Drug Therapy Flashcards
Effectiveness- Research support psychologists?
Kahn et al1986
Soomro et al 2008
Effectiveness- Kahn et al reasearch support?
Followed patients for 8 weeks, findings that BZs were more effective at treating anxiety compared to placebos
Showed that drugs are effective when using randomised control trails
Effectiveness- Soomro et al reaserch support?
Reviewed 17 studies that used SSRI’s to treat OCD. Patients found them to be more effective than placebos in reducing symptoms up to 3 months after treatment
Effectiveness- Reaserch support SEEW paragraph?
S- One strength of drug therapy is reaserch support
E-Kahn et al reaserch
E- Suggesting to us that drug treatments are effective due to Kahn reaserch or Soomro et al, as anti anxiety as they lower heart rate and the CNS. Furthermore, suggesting to us that drug therapy’s effective
E- This is a strength as there is convincing evidence to suggest that drug therapy like anti anxiety medications are effective as dugs have physiological impact on the body. Furthermore when compared to talking therapies, drug therapy can be seen as effective due to its physical and instantaneous impact on patients
Effectiveness- comparison to other approaches?
-Compared to other treatments like psychotherapy and cbt, Drug therapy is relatively cheap for the patient especially in the UK, as we now have the NHS
-Less time invested in the patient as they only meet every few months to discuss the progress
-Quick and easy so less effort
Effectiveness- comparison to other approaches SEEW?
S- another strength is that it’s cheaper and more practical
E- Compared to the other treatments like psychotherapy and CBT, it’s cheep for the patient due to the NHS
E- Furthermore, patient is investing less of their time and motivation toward the therapy then they would in CBT so bigger chance of recovery especially if busy
W- Strength as its efficient and easy to administer compared to other therapy’s
Effectiveness- Treating the symptom not the cause SEEW?
S- One weakness is treating the symptom not the cause
E- Drugs have the ability to treat the symptoms of psychological disorders, does not address underlying cause
E- Furthermore the patient only receives help for short term, not the long term as the problems not solved
W- This is a weakness as the patient will never be able to fully recover as suppressing emotions as they dont speak about them, deeming it uneffective
SEEW- side effects?
S- One weakness is side effects
E- Soomro et al Many drugs have side effects like nausea headache and insomnia with SSRIS
these might not seem so bad but it can be off putting
Especially in tricyclic antidepressant
E- Furthermore if patients don’t receive the carre which could be more damaging then side effects, if depression or anxiety stops it could cause another problem
W- weakness as patients feel worse than if they hadn’t started, why do therapy when it causes problems when there’s alternatives like CBT and psychotherapy with no side effects
Effectiveness- side effect Soomro et al 2008?
Many drugs have side effects like nausea headache and insomnia with SSRIS
these might not seem so bad but it can be off putting
Especially in tricyclic antidepressant
Effectiveness- research against Koran et al 2007
Koran et al 2007 one issue regarding the effectiveness of drug therapy is that most studies only last 3-4 months
Issue as there is less long term data so we ‘provide and impact to say that this is a long term fix
Effectiveness- research against SEEW paragraph?
S- One weakness of drug therapy is that there’s reasearch against
E-Koran et al 2007 one issue regarding the effectiveness of drug therapy is that most studies only last 3-4 months
Issue as there is less long term data so we ‘provide and impact to say that this is a long term fix
E-So less research regarding the effectiveness so there’s no impacts, unable to say if its a temporary fix
C- Despite less research regarding long term, the effectiveness and immediate impact is sometimes necessary
E- Weakness because if it isn’t long term how is it effective
Ethics- Use of placebos to mentally ill patients SEEW?
S- An ethical weakness is that there can be placebos
E- In biological trials it can be considered unethical to give patients a drug that’s considered an inferior. Substituting an effective drug for placebo is considered unethical as it exposed patients a less effective treatment
E- e.g. The patient could be left a disadvantage is suffering mental health problems and aren’t receiving any medication for this. Instead research should control condition with an effective drug when testing new treatment
W- Weakness as patient may find out placebos been used and might not work
Ethics- Informed consent regarding information about drugs SEEW?
S- One weeness of therapy is that the consent regarding info about drugs
E- May be exaggerated the benefits in order for drugs to be taken as well they ay ignore the therapeutic side of therapy
E- An example is the psychological benefits are slim and p isn’t told
W- Therefore a weakness as we are lying to patient how can we consent to something we don’t know are aren’t informed about, hugely unethical
Ethics- protection from serious harm SEEW?
S- An ethical strength of the drug therapy is that in some cases medication can prevent patients who are at risk from harm
E- Opposite to CBT drug therapy does not require as much hard work and might not work for patients.. In cases where patient has severe symptoms e.g. hallucinations and suicide. Drug therapy is sometimes the only way to protect the patient. W/O medication patient may be at risk of harming themselves and others. Once work patients may be able to open up in CBT
E- Due to biological intervention of drug therapy it’s able to target the causes of mental illnesses like the abundance of neurotransmitters within the brain. Targets areas talking therapy cant
W- Significant within dt as able to target and treat mental illnesses that have biological causes that can’t be treated in CBT
