Evaluation For Treating Phobias Flashcards
Appropriateness :Traumatic experience - flooding and System desensitisation
Flooding makes patients have a panic attack and makes them sad and uncomfortable patients are unwilling to see through to the end of flooding so their phobia doesn’t get cured and money and time has also been wasted
System desensitation should not be traumatic as not directly exposed to phobic stimulus at once: able to suit a wide range of individuals and doesn’t increase is of heart attack or a panic attack
Effectiveness: successful treatment - flooding & system desensitation
Research by Gilroy et al (2003) shown that SD does reduce anxiety in some phobias
After 3 months and after 33 months the SD group was less fearful of their phobia
Studies by ourgin (2001) Flooding is a successful treatment as it is fast and high effective as they quickly learn phobic stimulus is indeed no threat and so are free of symptoms as soon as possible
These behaviourist treatments give client techniques that they can use long after therapy ends so remains useful and empowering for their life. So these behavioural techniques are a long term solution so very effective and better than medicine
