Abnormality - Standard deviation / Infrequency Flashcards
What should the definition of abnormality do?
help us to identify who really does need help
help us to step in at the right time to help them
What should the definition of abnormality not do?
shouldn’t label people who are just a bit different or those whose behaviour makes us feel uncomfortable.
What is statistical infrequency / deviation ?
any relative unusual behaviour is classed as normal whilst any unusual behaviour is classed as abnormal
Explain the statistical deviation graph?
example
the average IQ is 100
68% = range 85 - 115
only 2 % score below 70
if you are 2% what can happen?
you can be liable to receive a diagnosis of a psychological disorder - intellectual disability disorder.
evaluation of standard deviation abnormality : Real life application
Real life application : can be used by doctors in real life to diagnose some disorders such as depression which increases the usefulness
Evaluation : Objective cut of point
There is a certain point of when depression starts so this can be used for doctors to identify whether they do have depression
Evaluation : Weakness is that Labels everyone who is different
Some differences and unusual behaviour is desirable such as having a high IQ however characteristics are still labelled as abnormal. They might not need a label but are still diagnosed as abnormal.
