  • When discussing deprivation, people assume that it is physical separation that is the cause but it may also be emotional.
    e.g) a mother may be physically present but unable to provide suitable emotional care, thus depriving her children.

Yarrow et al. Studied mothers who were severly depressed and found that 55% of their children were insecurely attached, compared to 29% with the non-depressed group.

A

Antonia Bifulro studied women who had experienced separation from their mothers either because of maternal death or temporary seperation of more than a year and found that 25% later experienced depression or anxiety, compared to 15% who had no experience of separation.The mental health problems were much greater in those women whose loss occurred before the age of 6.

  • Before his research, children were separated from parents when they visited hospitals and visiting was discouraged or forbidden.
