Euakryotic cells - Mitochondrion Flashcards
What shape is the mitochondrion?
Sausage shaped organelle.
What happens in the mitochondrion?
Where aerobic respiration takes place.
What does the mitochondrion release?
Energy in the form of the molecules ATP from carbohydrates, lipids and other energy rich molecules.
Cells that have many mitochondria…
Use a lot of energy.
eg muscle cells.
What are mitochondria surrounded by?
A double membrane.
The outer membrane is simple and quite permeable.
The inner membrane is highly folded into cristae, which give a large surface area
What is the space enclosed by the inner membrane called?
Mitochondrial matrix.
Contains small circular strands of DNA.
What is the inner membrane studded with?
Stalked particles which are enzymes that make ATP.
