What are the 4 institutions of EU law?
Council, Commission, Parliament, Court of Justice
What is the function of the European Council?
Sets political direction, resolves major issues
What is the function of the European Commission?
Proposes Legislation, Enforces EU law, Represents the EU internationally
What is the function of the Court of Justice?
Ensured equal interpretation of EU law, Settles disputes, enforces compliance
What are the three sources of EU law?
Treaties, Regulations and Directives
What are treaties and what is their impact?
They are the main source of EU law and establish the legal framework, they also have direct effect and are binding for all member states as well as taking precedence over national law
What are regulations and their impact?
Legislation that is directly applicable and binding, apply equally amongst all member states and cannot be altered as they are immediately applied to all member states
What are directives and their impact?
Set out goals or objectives for member states to achieve but allow the countries to implement them within a time frame but if failed to be done by that time e.g. two years, they will have direct effect
