Ethnicity - Internal Factors - The 'New IQism' Flashcards
What is New IQism?
New IQism is where teachers place students in sets on the basis of poor attainment, disciplinary concerns and perceptions of their attitude. For example, G+Y found that teachers had racialised expectations that black pupils would pose more disciplinary problems.
How is the New IQism linked to setting and streaming?
Gillborn argues that teachers and policy makers make false assumptions about the nature of pupils’ ability and potential.
They see potential as a fixed quality that can be easily measured - and one measured, pupils can be put into the ‘right’ set or stream, onto the Gifted and Talentend programme, and so on.
What did GIllborn and Youdell say about secondary schools and streaming?
Gillborn and Youdell (2001) note that secondary schools are increasingly using old style intelligence (IQ) tests to allocate pupils to different streams on entry.
How does Gillborn critice the New IQism?
For Gillborn, however, there is no genuiune measure of potential, as it can’t predict what an individual will be like in the future.
What does Gillborn conclude?
Gillborn concludes that the education system is institutionally racist, and it creates an environment in which ethnic mintority pupils are disadvantaged.
