Ethnicity - Internal Factors - Assessment Flashcards
What does Gillborn say about assessements in the education system?
GIllborn (2008) argues that ‘the assessment game’ is rigged to validate the dominant cultures superiority (British).
What does Gillborn say happens to Black pupils assessment scores if the are succeeding?
GIllborn (2008) says that in the education system ‘the rules will be changed to re-engineer failure’ if black pupils are seen to be achieving.
What is an example of black pupil assessment scores being changed?
For example, in the past, primary schools used ‘baseline assessments’ which tested pupils ability and knowledge when they started compulsory education.
However, these were replaced in 2003 with foundation stage profile (FSP) assessments, which are completed at the end of reception year (change in timing).
What was the result of the changing from baseline assessments to foundation stage profile?
As a result, black pupils now appeared to be doing worse than white pupils.
However, before this black children in 2000 had been the highest achievers on entry to school, but by 2003 the new FSP had black children ranked lower than white children across all 6 developmental areas that it measured.
What does Gillborn say is the explanation for the change in black pupils assessment scores?
- FSP is based on teachers judgements, whereas baseline assessments often used written tests as well.
- A change in timing: the FSP is completed at the end of reception year, whereas baseline assessments were done at the start of primary school.
Gillborn argues that both these factors increase the risk of teachers’ stereotyping affecting the results.
What does Sanders and Horn find about GCSE results?
Sanders and Horn (1995) found that there was more weight given to tasks assessed by teachers rather than written exams in GCSE’s.
So the gap between the scores of different ethinic groups widened.
