- some minorities more likely to be materially deprived which affects school choice

-studied ambitions of black girls who didn’t achieve their aims due to teachers racism
-3 types of teachers :
colour blind (believes students are equal but doesn’t challenge racism)
liberal chauvinists (believes black pupils are culturally deprived and have low expectations)
overt racists (actively discriminate)
what is Sewells study
-how students / subcultures deal with racism
-4 types:
rebels (openly hate school, excluded often)
conformists (largest group, attempt to fit in to avoid stereotyping)
retreatists (isolated from school and subcultures, despised by rebels)
innovators (anti school but pro education eg Fullers girls)
what is Wrights study
- negative stereotyping of asian students
- in primary teachers assume they have poor grasp of English so excluded
- disapproval of customs eg getting annoyed when corrected in name pronunciation
what was Smith and Tomilsons study
- Indian/Bangladeshi/Chinese students exclusion rates lower than white pupils per thousand
- Caribbean pupils over 3x more likely to be permanently excluded than the school population as a whole

-high achieving black pupils taking FSP to measure abilities suddenly became lowest achieving and part of it is based on teacher assessments
