Surveys of tv indicates that black people are under represented and when they are they ranged of roles is limited and rarely shown as ordinary people who happen to be black.

Until recent years blacks have been portrayed as servants figures of fun or slaves this has been replaced by tokenism where members of the ethnic minority’s are included to show the media product isn’t racist

Studied inner city riots of the 1980’s he used content analysis and argued that British media constantly focused on racial explanation of the of the riots when lots of the people involved were white young males
Hall
Said that there are 3 basic representations of blacks I the media’ entertainer, native and slave. Ethnicity is views though the white eye and interpreted though the grammar of race. Ethnic minorities are presented as inferior and subordinate whites as dominate and superior.

Argues that there are positive changes in soaps where ethnic minorities are treated in a less stereotypical way and as ordinary people rather than exotic and dangerous

There has been greater visibility of ethnic minorities in addition there had been a growth in digital radio stations catering for ethnic minorities.

Argue that the poor representation of some minority’s reflects their current social standing

The media uses racism to promote the interest of the powerful, eg by blaming unemployment can be passed to ethnic minorities groups rather than the real cause which is capitalism.
